Q. Who should apply?
A. The scholarship is open to any incoming or current student of a United States based university/college that meets the scholarship requirements.

Q. What are the scholarship requirements?
A. The applicant must be either a citizen of an African country or a first generation American with one or more parents who are from an African country. The applicant must also meet the financial requirements which are to be from a household with a total yearly income less than $50,000 and/or provide proof of the applicant’s personal payment of tuition (applicant must also have a yearly income lower than $50,000). The applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.0. Submission of academic transcripts and financial documents will be required after the applicant has been selected as a potential finalist for the scholarship.

Q. What is the scholarship amount and how will the recipient receive it?
A. The scholarship amount is $5,000, paid one time directly to the financial aid office at the students school of choice prior to starting the semester. Amount of scholarships awarded vaires year to year.

Q. When is the application due?
A. You can apply until May 15th by 11:59pm EST, or until we reach the maximum number of applicants, whichever comes first.

Q. When will the finalists be chosen?
A. The finalists will be chosen by June 15th.

Q. Who will be selecting the finalists?
A. The Rwayitare Family and the Zawadi Foundation board.

Q. Can applicants reapply next year?
A. Yes, applicants can reapply, including previous recipients.

Q. Why can the applicant submit a video or an essay?
A. The Zawadi Foundation wants to present an inclusive opportunity for all applicants who excel in verbal and/or written communication.
